Usually you need to set the network card settings on the virtual machine to "bridging" so that it bridges with the network card on your physical computer. Once that's done, you can just get your settings via DHCP.

from vmware player:
Virtual Machine > Network Adapter > settings > "bridged connected directly to the physical network"
