What if it's unknown, warning, critical, pending?

The "warning" and "critical" are not valid host states.
If a host is in a pending state, nagios will be sending you alerts about its services. However, if the host is in down or unknown state, nagios won't be sending you alerts about services on this host.

Would service alerts go out if the host is in a soft state, lets say its on its third check out of five, but a service already goes into hard state. Would I get service alerts for that service? Do service alerts go out if the host is in a soft state, or does it have to be in a hard state?

As soon as the host goes down (even soft state), the alerts for its services won't be sent out.
