Notification question

hello,

I just noticed some users are getting email notifications for services they didn't subscribe to. There is however a contact group configured who is a notification contact for the host of this service. does this mean once you are a notification contact for a host, you are immediatley also a notification contact for all its services?
Is there a way to work around this? because I want some users to get email once the host is down, but not when a service for this host is in warning / critical state. Should the contact group only be a notification contact for the ping service if I want the above?

Tx

Nope. You should only get notified for the objects you are a contact on. There must be a misconfiguration, as contacts on hosts will only alert hosts, while contacts on services will only alert for those services.

Well, I think there is something wrong with the notification system then. Something must be messed up as, there is definitely no user configured as notification contact for some services and they do receive notifications. Also when I tried to add myself as a notification contact, suddenly also another user received notifications.
I really don't get whre things are going wrong. Checked the notification settings in XI as wel as in CCM. No contacts defined. After I added my user, I can see my user as contact, although 4 other users also receive notifications for this service.

I need to get this cleared out. Any help is welcome..

Umm, it is my understanding (and I just tested it) that if you have a contact or contact group on a host and no contact or contact group on a service for that host, the service inherits the contacts from the host.

This is part of Implied inheritance which you can read about it 3/4 of the way down this page
http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/ ... tance.html

Services will inherit contacts from contact groups applied to a host.
