Upgrade Advice Please

Hi All,
I am looking for advice on the best way to upgrade my Nagios installation (or whether I should keep it as is). I am currently running Nagios 2011R3.2 on Centos 6.2. I originally downloaded and installed the virtual machine setup with this version and haven't done much updating at all of either Nagios or Centos. I don't think I've added many external commands / libraries / packages but don't really remember.
So, as near as I can tell my options are
1. upgrade the existing Centos to 6.4 and Nagios to 2012R2.2 in place,
2. download the latest VM and do a backup of the existing nagios system and restore to the new one using the backup_xi.sh / restore_xi.sh scripts,
3. stay put (I don't have any pressing need to update I don't think).
Cheers,
Chris.
PS. Is there an easy way to list any additions I've made to the nagios setup on my existing machine?
