Upgrade from 1.1 to 3.5

Well, I've been handed a fun little project, I've been asked to upgrade our current Nagios system, which if the home page is to be believed, is at version 1.1 to the most current stable release, which appears to be 3.5.

I've been looking on the website and I see references to upgrading with the verison 3 family, and upgrade from version 2.x, but nothing about upgrading from version 1.x.

Any suggestions to get me started in the right direction would be appreciated, at this point, I'm just putting the plan in place for the boss.

Thanks;

Charles

Oh wow, it shouldn't be "that" bad, but it is going to require some work. Mainly you will have to update configs to be compliant with 2.x standards, then 3.x standards, or make the jump directly to 3. Secondly would be plugins that are different, non-existant, or have varying syntax now.

Honestly, I would suggest starting from scratch. Put up a new virtual machine, if possible, install your preferred version of linux, compile and install core 3.5, and begin building your configs again. One thing to note, I would suggest disabling notifications globally on the new one, until it is ready to be deployed.

Thanks Spencer, kinda figured that was gonna be the way to go. Turns out a previous employee had already created that virtual machine so it's just a matter of spinning that thing back up and start playing around with it.

The obvious question is will I be able to copy the config files from the old installation to the new, or is all of that going to have to be entered from scratch. We're monitoring 956 services on 454 devices.

Thanks

Direct copy, absolutely not. There will be changes that need to be made, what those are, I cannot tell you as I can't seem to find a guide going from 1.x to 2.x.

I was told we've got a script that's supposed to do that. Don't know if it was something done in house or what, but I'm into the new VM, let me mess around for awhile and I'll post back if (or should I say "when") I have questions. :D

Thanks

Is there a way I can get this demo license renewed? We ran out of time on this because the employee who was working on it left, and we're just getting around to picking it back up. It's the Nagios XI. I got it running, but any time I try to look at anything it says the license has expired and I need to buy one. We're going to buy the license, we just need to do a little more testing first.

Nevermind, we got it. Since some work had been done already, I copied everything from /usr/local/nagios/etc we'll blow that vm away, download a new one, and copy the etc dir back.

You guys are pretty good, I thought I could trick it by setting the date back on the server, but when I tried to log into the web interface, it said:

"Sorry Dave, but I can't do that." Pretty slick!! :D

Thanks

Yeah, we've seen that trick... :?

If you need an extension on the XI demo, you can contact our sales department, they are pretty good at working in a little more time...

Thanks, but we're going to shut down the old VM and create a new one. I'll work on the new VM while the paperwork makes it way through the system to purchase the license. I work for the state so that process could take awhile. Shocker, right!!!
