Changing switch port

Post by tonyyarusso »

One of the most common changes in our network is to upgrade a link from 1Gbps to 10Gbps, which usually involves switching to a different port on the switch. When that happens, we need to update Nagios to monitor status and bandwidth of the new port, and ideally seamlessly carry over all of the history and graphs of the old port to the new one. As far as I can tell, that involves a tremendously tedious process of deleting or uncommenting lines from mrtg.conf, deleting mrtgscan files, finding and renaming the RRD file, re-running the switch wizard to re-scan the ports, and adding the new one with the same service description as before.

Is there a better way? If not, could there PLEASE be one soon?

Yes, we have thought about this and will have a new implementation in the works for the next MAJOR XI release, due this winter. It will definitely be on the list of favorite feature enhancements for many users. Apologies for the wait Tony.

Let me hijack a thread

Do you (Nagios) post a list of new feature set? I'd love to see what has been decided to be worked on and get excited about it :)

Yes, but not yet, as we are still finalizing what will make the cut. More information should leak out after the conference as all eyes and brains are focused on the week of the 30th. I have a couple juicy bits:
1. Reworked mrtg
2. Stackable, multiple host and service graphs (using the graph explorer api)
3. A number of new wizards (including mongo db and aws/ec2)
4. Some other top secret stuff to be talked about later - potentially at the conference :P
