/etc/resolv.conf have a line about search domain:

# grep search /etc/resolv.conf
search mynet.lan mynet.wan

You tested name like "LETTERS"...and my name of host, (that not
pinged) was like "LETTERS-DASH-DIGITS" ("3Com-4050").


May be, Nagios cant resolve name with DASH?
