I think its a good idea, so I'll add these macros to Nagios 3 CVS shortly:

HOSTDOWNTIMEAUTHOR
HOSTDOWNTIMEAUTHORNAME
HOSTDOWNTIMEAUTHORALIAS
HOSTDOWNTIMECOMMENT

SERVICEDOWNTIMEAUTHOR
SERVICEDOWNTIMEAUTHORNAME
SERVICEDOWNTIMEAUTHORALIAS
SERVICEDOWNTIMECOMMENT

These macros will only be available during notifications for: downtime
start, downtime end, and downtime cancellation.
