[Nagios-devel] Semicolons in plugin output

Quick question - what is the reason behind the conversion of semicolons
in plug-in output to colons? Is it to prevent issues with parsing of
status.dat?
The reason I ask is that I have some plug-ins that output HTML entities
(which all end in semicolons of course), and they end up looking a tad
ugly in the GUI. I was considering patching my local instance of Nagios
to handle that, and I wanted to make sure of what dragons I was going to
run into if I attempted it...
