This is an excellent idea and I'll put it on the blocks for 3.0.
Notifying contacts when downtime starts/stops/gets cancelled is easy...
the $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$ macro will be set to one of the following:

DOWNTIMESTART
DOWNTIMEEND
DOWNTIMECANCELLED

Does anyone have objections to this?

Sending notification of impending downtime is difficult, and I don't
know if we can do it. The reason for this is that some downtime entries
do not start at a specific time (e.g. flexible and triggered downtime).
Also, there could be multiple overlapping scheduled downtime entries
for a particular host/service that could complicate this even further.

A possible solution would be allowing for "custom" notifications that
can be initiated by users through the web interface. The
$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$ macro could be set to "CUSTOM" and author/comment
data could be available in the $xACKAUTHOR$ $xACKDATA$ macros (or
perhaps new macros are in order). Custom notifications might be useful
for a number of reasons - e.g. relaying updates on the status of fixes.
When downtime is scheduled, an option could be added to the web
interface that would allow a custom notification to be sent out
notifying contacts of the downtime that was scheduled.

How does the custom notification feature sound to folks?
