[Nagios-devel] Great product - 2 feature suggestions

Post by Guest »

Adding that feature would be great. For a temporary fix I have all of my
hostgroups defined in the hosts file. I monitor things in different cities
and have a hosts file dedicated to each city. Within each of those hosts
files I have a hostgroup that contains all of those hosts.

A feature that I have request and have seen request by other is to allow
hostgroup definitions to use wild cards like router* or firewall*. The
single * wildcard is supported now but it just grabs all hosts.

yes, i concur. having the ability, perhaps without removing the current
method, to keep more info in one file would make maintenance less tedious
and prone to fat-finger errors.

dean

Hi all!

I've just started migrating our monitoring from Nocol/Snips
to Nagios. Seems like it scales a lot better. The template
system is great!

2 things struck me:

With > 100 subscriber lines to monitor maintaining host groups
_and_ host entries consistently quickly becomes tedious.
It would be great if I could have host group definitions
without any memmbers and then specify in the host declaration,
which groups each host belongs to.

I use hostextinfo for chosing of the "correct" icons in the map
display only - at the moment.
Again, I have to maintain every host in 2 different places.
The template system helps a lot, but still I need one hostextinfo
entry per host. And of course I can't keep hostextinfo in the
same file as the host entries proper, because only the CGI
understands "define hostextinfo".
Specifying hostextinfo for hostgroups would be great. Or make
the nagios process recognise and silently ignore hostextinfo entries
in configuration files so I can keep everything in one place.

Nothing too serious, just suggestions.
Besides that I like the product a lot!

Thanks to all developers for the work,
