Mailbox full?

I've been receiving messages lately that I have new mail in/var/spool/mail/root

[root@srvnagios01 mail]# ls -l
total 50072
-rw-rw----. 1 nagios mail 64371 May 20 14:12 nagios
-rw------- 1 root mail 51199196 Oct 23 19:30 root
-rw-rw---- 1 rpc mail 0 May 29 16:30 rpc

When I do a tail, it seems the last message is from somewhere in september... Is it possible my root mailbox is full? Is there some way to rotate this? Or clean it up periodically? All email also seems to stay unread somehow.

Grtz

Take a look at the top answer on this page:

http://superuser.com/questions/306163/w ... linux-unix

In essence, they are system messages.

Yes I got that, I tried

Code: Select all

mail -N
d *
So I did

Code: Select all

> /var/spool/mail/root
which seems to have emptied the mailbox

Now it seems I get every 5 minutes an email with mrtg errors. Looking around a bit, it seems http://support.nagios.com/forum/viewtop ... =16&t=8626 is explaining exactly the issue we have.. I'll make the updates to the crontab for mrtg tomorrow.

Ok, a colleague of mine had changed the ip addres of a switch and apparently in the mrtg.cfg file there were traces of the old IP. He did a replace all in the mrtg.cfg and now we dont get any new email in the root mailbox. It seems strange we got errors for all the ports, while they only monitor the uplink port, but I'm not gonna look into that... Got enough work already with my servers and storage... Thread can be closed..
