passive host checks

Post by sanidhya1986 »

Hi,

I am using nagios 3.5.1, I want to enable both passive and active host checks as my hosts are behind firewall. The host checks should be primarily passive and if passive host checks fail (if my nagios subordinate server behind firewall dies), then the host checks should be active. How could I achieve this ?

What you are referring to is called a Freshness Check. You can set a freshness interval to a certain time, let's say 30 minutes, and if after 30 minutes you have not gotten a passive check result from that host you can force an active check. You might still have problems getting through the firewall depending on your setup, but the core idea of what you need is possible.
