Question about Notifications

Post by ocolin »

Hello!

I am just starting to test out Nagios and had some questions which I have not been able to find on the forums (they may exist, but I have failed to find them) or the FAQ, so I thought I would create a post. My apologies if this is covered.

We have some hosts which aside from needing to be monitored directly, also contain virtual hosts/jails within them which also need to be monitored. Each of those may have a dozen or so services being monitored. Currently the way I have things configured, when there arises a problem (for example CPU usage is too hight), then I get dozens and dozens of separate pages/emails. One for every service on every virtual host and the physical host. All of these are accurate since the CPU of the physical host being too high (for example) is going to effect all of those services on all of those hosts.

However, I am wondering if it's possible for me to configure Nagios so that I can get one email notification or page which lists all of the problems rather than a couple dozen emails/pages. Or perhaps some way to minimize the amount of pages/emails that get sent out for this kind of host/virtual host scenario. The majority of the time it is a single problem, but getting dozens and dozens of pages/emails for it can be a bit cumbersome. And of course there are times where a single service on a single host can be an issue, so I do still need to make sure I get notified even if it's an individual service and not the entire physical host that is down.

Some of these things are difficult for me to describe, so I am not sure if I am being clear about my scenario. If more information is needed first, please let me know and I will try to keep checking back and provide whatever is needed. I am primarily trying to find out more so IF this is possible/feasible in order to work with management into purchasing the tool.Though knowing how would help to test it as I am only just beginning to learn Nagios XI. Thanks!

You can use Home -> Nagios BPI to create groups of items, and then use the Nagios BPI Wizard to report on the group as a whole, removing the notifications for the individual services, but just notifying on the group.

by default if the host is down, Nagios will not send notifications for the services.
