Confused - How to monitor a test server/client on Nagios XI?

Hello:
I'm just getting started with Linux and web administrating, and was handed a project to start configuring Nagios XI.
I have read a few of the documents that you have:
1). Nagios XI - Host Management
2). Nagios XI - Monitoring Windows Using WMI
3). Nagios XI - Upgrade Instructions
4). Nagios XI - Backing Up and Restoring
5). Nagios XI - Installing the Windows Agent
6). Nagios XI - Installing The Linux Agent
7). Nagios XI - Installing The WMI Client
and various others.

I have upgraded our Nagios XI server to the latest upgrade 2012R2.8 by following 4). and 3)., above. We are running Nagios XI on Red Hat (not sure of the version yet).

ISSUE: I wish to get a test client or two (one Linux server and one Windows server or Windows Desktop) into Nagios XI for monitoring and I am confused as to WHICH I need to do, for example: do I FIRST need to install a client to the Windows and/or Linux device and THEN add the device as a HOST into Nagios XI? If so, what is the better thing to do?
Is there a document on creating a push of the client using SCCM or something so as to not having to "sneakernet" each device, and then creating multiple HOSTS in Nagios XI?

Lastly, is the "localhost" and HOST both needing to be parents?

I just haven't pieced it together and appreciate your assistance.

Thank you!

You do not need to assign localhost as a parent to your configurations, but it must be present at all times (do not remove it). If you are attempting to set up active monitoring of Linux and Windows systems you can use either the NCPA wizard, or the Linux Server, and Windows Server wizards. At the beginning of each wizard, after you add the address to the servers you will be notified that you need to install the remote agent on those systems. The wizards should provide proper links to documentation on how to do so, and it looks like you already found the agent installation documents from http://library.nagios.com/.

In the Nagios XI 2014 release (Q1 of this year) you will/should have the ability to push agent installations to multiple servers at the same time, and have them configured so you do not need to personally log into the servers and configure them.
