Not necessarily incompatible, just a poor idea that we do not "officially" support. (I presume this is in reference to a workstation/desktop window manager . . )

yeah the centos server gui. Does the gui cause any issues with xi?

We have had issues with centos changing the default user $PATH in the workstation environments, but there are workarounds for this. The main reason to not install the full gui is cpu load - it is expensive in system resources to run gnome, metacity, and the other workstation fluff.
