Notication Problem

Hello,
We have a notication issue with one of our networking devices. The device "JewtACE4710" appeared to go down sometime in late December but failed to page out for a host or service alert. Looking through the event log I see:
Information2013-12-28 00:00:01CURRENT HOST STATE: JewtACE4710;DOWN;HARD;1;PING CRITICAL - Packet loss = 100%
Runtime Warning2013-12-27 00:59:25Warning: The check of host 'JewtACE4710' looks like it was orphaned (results never came back). I'm scheduling an immediate check of the host...
Information2013-12-27 00:00:04CURRENT SERVICE STATE: JewtACE4710;PING;CRITICAL;HARD;1;PING CRITICAL - Packet loss = 100%
So it showed down but never sent a notification. The interesting line is the "orphaned" result as I've not seen that before and I'm not sure what that means. We just realized the issue today. As a test we set the device to fail the check. Interestingly the Service Alert quits checking after 2 attempts and stops on 2/3 Attempts. This time the host did alert but the service alert did not. I've generated the profile.zip file and can provide and screen shots if that helps. Thanks!
