2014R1.0RC1 Initial reaction and question(s)

First thing today I had a conference cal;l, so I used that time to install 2014R1.0RC1 on my dev server.

Initial reactions:
1.) So much text flying by during the install...my eyes hurt from trying to monitoring for any warnings, LOL. I know this can't be changed, wow there seemed to be quite a bit involved in that upgrade :)
2.) The new theme is very nice and I love the new location for the search box. My only complaint is when looking at the long list of services/hosts, there are no longer grid lines and when the list is 1000 long, the grid lines are kind of nice.
3.) OMG OMG OMG The performance graphs and graph explorer.....OMG! Whoever worked on those deserves a raise, seriously!
4.) My dev server is a very small install, but even with that, it sure does seem quite a bit snappier
5.) All the report changes are GREAT!
6.) Is there a way to shut off the Network Analyzer tab? Without using that here(I do want to, and am slowly working on it) I would rather not see that tab.
7.) There are a couple of my feature requests that seem to be included(YAY) but are still open in tracker. I think they can be closed: 468 and 451
8.) Was really hoping for a few others to have gotten in, it is the only thing that depresses me about the release.

Question(s):
9.) When initiating the upgrade I got this:
Additionally, this upgrade will install Nagios Core 4 which will require recompiling of addon modules such as mod_gearman, livestatus, etc.
Let's pretend I'm not the nagios genius that I am and that i am an idiot..I know it's a stretch, but try....anyway...."recompile mod_gearman" <---HUH?
10.) The upgrade will have no issue with offloaded databases, right?

1) I'll bring the grid idea up, I noticed that was not there anymore as well.
2) I closed your two tracker issues pertaining to features that were added.
3) I believe by re-compile, whoever wrote that message meant re-install on the XI server via the script we provide, since it is installed via RPM's.
4) Offloaded DB's are still fine, in fact XI will now pull backups from them.

Thanks for the feedback as always!

Correct the upgrade should gracefully handle your offloaded db just fine. Of course, testing in your dev environment is always a good idea.

I think, but will have to verify, that the recompile of mod_gearman should be due to the change in the core source code and some reliance on it from gearman. Specifically I would imagine this to be most related to submitting the check results back to core. Again though I would really have to ask why we make this statement and do some testing, as I don't actually use gearman, and core 4 in the somewhat near future will have no need for it either... yep more to tease you with!

Spenser - Please verify what is needed for gearman. I do have like 9 or 10 workers(mainly to get around firewalls more easily, not for load) and it would be essential for me to have that working within a few minutes of upgrading to 2014 once it is out of beta, as I plan to upgrade the day it is released.

My dev environment is not as complex as my prod. I do not have gearman or offloaded db in dev :(

As I had mentioned above that is covered in the script we provide in the mod_gearman integration document.

Code: Select all

gearmand-0.25-1
gearmand-devel-0.25-1
mod_gearman-1.3.8-1.e
If you want to do this manually, those are all located at:

http://mod-gearman.org/download/v1.3.8/

You need to filter down for your rhel/centos version, and arch.

Thanks Sam. It has just been so long since I installed the gearman_neb I just forget what i had to do. It's what scares me the most about upgrading when out of beta, since it is essential to my environment. I will for sure re-read the integration document.

Sure, I'd try removing gearman from one of your test servers and seeing how the core workers in core 4 handle things comparatively. You may be pleasantly surprised! If you have questions feel free to ask, as I know you will. :)

Wait.....what? :?

I didn't think Core 4 workers were out yet?!?!

Also, as I stated above, unfortunately my dev system does not have gearman, it is not a mirror of prod, although I could work on getting it setup for testing.

I believe slansing was talking about "local" workers. I don't think "remote" Core 4 workers are available, yet. I would be wise to try gearman on the test server, unless you like testing in production... :)
Nagios 4 is not fully tested yet, but there is a preview version available here http://mod-gearman.org/download/v1.4.0nagios4/ or in the nagios4 branch of the source tree.

Already added for the next release...

Already added for the next release... It will be in the settings for the component when you get it.

Shouldn't be a problem, as a matter of fact, much work was done to minimize changes that need to be made for offloaded DB's
