Auto-Discovery Wizard sets Address to "address". Scans fail

I am using the OVA appliance: http://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nagi ... 2.9-64.ova

Q: What version of Nagios XI are you using?
A: 2012R2.9

Q: Linux Distribution and version?
A: CentOS - 64-bit

Q: VMware Image or Manual Install of XI?
A: OVA [see above]

Auto-Discovery v2.04

I don't believe my system is customized other than changing the root and config passwords and changing hostname/dhcp->static.

After the auto-discovery jobs finish, I start the Auto-Discovery Monitoring Wizard. On Step 2, I choose:
Show: All Hosts
Default Services: Common
Host Addresses: IP Addresses

On the resulting screen it shows the correct IP addresses in the "Address" column however after I've completed the wizard, all of the host checks fail. Every single one. Upon investigation, I went to Re-configure the hosts and found that each and every one of their "Address" fields was set to "address" instead of an IP or FQDN. I updated it to be the hosts' IP address which then worked great after it re-scanned.

I've got to think this is a bug but open to any suggestions, thanks!

Yes that was in fact a bug, you will need to update your component by going to Admin > Manage Components > Upload the attached zip file. That should fix it up for you!

I appreciate the help. I couldn't quickly find the version number that's set in the attachment you provided. Is it newer than the 2.04 version I have already?

The reason I ask is:

- The "Check for Updates" command doesn't find an update for that component;
- When I upload the autodiscovery.zip file a red box (error) appears with the text "Component installation failed."
- I compared the directory on my server with the extracted zip file contents using WinMerge and all of the files are identical with the following exceptions:

autodiscover_new.php
The attachment has several SVN-related files/directories
The server has several .out/.watch/.xml files in the jobs directory

Should I just transfer the zip contents and overwrite the server copy using something like FileZilla? I stopped since the auto-updater shows nothing and uploading the zip file in the interface doesn't work either. Also note that I've successfully updated other out-of-date components and installed 1-2 additional ones too so I believe the basic zip upload process is functioning.

Looking at it more, I'm wondering if it's actually the Auto-Discovery config wizard that's out-of-date. I have v1.2 and the update manager for wizards does show a v1.3 update for it. Unforunately it looks like you have to have an active support contract in order to download it. Double unfortunately there's no way I can proof-of-concept Nagios very well without having a good way to add auto-discovered hosts! Will continue poking around.

Ah, the wizard may cause that as well. I'll have to check if it's okay to share the wizard with you here, auto discovery can be useful, but is definitely "in my opinion" not the way to monitor your hosts and services alone. It essentially runs an NMAP scan of a netmask and pulls address it can talk to, as well as some common ports open on them. It is highly useful as a cataloging tool for hosts, which you can then run other wizards against.

With a 60-day trial I think auto discovery is a good way to get a lot of data into the system to see how it handles load, etc... Gives things to look at for Executive dashboard type of things :-)

After the initial population of known server net's I'll start drilling down defining services, dependencies, etc... but I'm hoping to at least get a quick up/down notification working for all of our hosts initially.

Anxious to see if it's ok to get the wizard update, thanks!

It looks like it is being pushed with the XI 2014 beta right now, by the time your trial is up 2014 should be released, and we have not noted any core system bugs in it. Would you be opposed to trying the beta out? It is listed on the downloads page.

Not opposed at all. I'll download it and take a look, thanks!
