Is there any reason why the status bar is so big?

I wouldn't really consider that too big unless you're on an old 800x600 monitor. The CSS padding on that box is 19px, so double that for 38px, then about 12px for the font and you have 50px.

I'm also going to suggest you use the search feature of the forums before asking a duplicate question, this might help you out in the future.

I would agree that the status bar is too big. Why should a single line status bar at the bottom be bigger than the menu bar along the top?

I think a size of about 35 pixels would be better, something like:

Totally agreed. I see no reason for it being sized that big and taking up valuable screen area.
On my 1284 x 1024 monitor it is too big and out of place.

We can put in a feature request for this. Task ID 3396 has been made to fix the spacing. Closing thread.
