Making a little progress on the notifications, I found a server that even though the contact was clearly listed in Contact Mangement for the host and all the services, he never received any alerts for this particular server.

I went into CCM and removed his name from the contacts on all services and the from the host, applied the config, then went back and added him back to the services and the host, applied config again, and now he's getting notifications. Guess the GUI was lying to me.

So my question is, as I find these, and there are a number of them, should I just repeat the process above, or go directly to the service and host .cfg files and update the contacts there?

Seems it would be faster to update the contacts in the config files because from he GUI I have to first remove them, apply the config, add them back, then apply the config again. To me it looks I just need to edit the services config file and the host config file, write and verify the config, and then I'm done.

Does that sound about right?

Did you configure this contact the same way it used to be configured (same contact template/host and service notification commands)?

How this contact was created on the first place - as a Nagios XI user, who is also a contact (Admin->Manage Users->Add New User) or as a "contact only" (CCM->Contacts->Add New)?

Sorry for not explaining things better the first time.

While I can't say with 100% certainty that this contact was originally added to the services and host via Bulk Modification, I'm pretty sure it was as I went through and updated contacts on a lot of our hosts and services based on internal reassignments of servers to support techs. I've read posts in the past where using the Bulk Modification feature is not always 100%.

So back to my original question, is it better to correct these via the CCM or edit the .cfg files?

Most (if not all) of the configuration changes in XI should be done via the CCM. If you modify the configs, next time you apply configuration, they will be overwritten with whatever is in the database.

Makes sense, especially given how Linux challenged I am.
