I am quite interested in adding Reactor to my Nagios Core VM, will it mess up the installation of Nagios and its related tools?

I would not really recommend putting it on the same server as another Nagios installation (or VM for that matter). Reactor does install a number of packages which may cause conflicts, for example, NRPE, and the Nagios Plugins package. Is there any way you can put it on a separate VM for testing?

That is fine, i will try out the VM, but i am currently suffering from VM bloat - just about everyone wants us to download a VM with a perfect setup/environment to run their product - what with all the bloat from vsphere - looks like I will now have to start a collection of Nagios related VMs.

I am just getting to grips with Nagios - but realise that i need automation as well as comprehensive monitoring - i WAS about to start to create a plethora of scripts to do what i want - which i would integrate into my workflow with nagios core, i was hoping that Reactor could live on the same machine as the monitoring - once i have a firm idea of what it actually needs i might give it a try on my core server - i might actually roll my own system for reactor so that i really know what it needs and does, at the moment i am a bit in the dark with the CORE VM - as i did not build it myself.

Reactor being a newer product I can't really say either what effects it might have if you installed it on a shared server. I can do some testing tomorrow (it's getting toward the end of our work day) and see if it plays nicely. I would imagine Reactor + Core might work, but Reactor + XI or NNA maybe not since those products rely more on the web interface and databases, whereas Core relies mainly on the command line.

Did you work out whether I can add a reactor to my core?

I guess there is some kind of fission fusion joke possible there, I too have not had time to download and try it out, due to the bash injection issue. I would still value (highly) your recommendations on adding reactor to core.

I'm going to guess that he hasn't had a chance to take a look. Let me give him a good poke and see!

Sorry, had a busy week. Building the Core VM at the moment. Will update this post as I go.

Update 1: Installed Reactor on top of Core. Both products seem to be working still, at least their web interfaces. Going to test the actual functionality next. NRPE was installed prior and the config was not modified by Reactor.

Update 2: Checked on top of XI, no errors there either. I think it should be alright although we do still recommend separate servers.
