Hi Team,

We have installed 32-nit NSClient on one of servers (Win Server 2003 R2, SP2, Enterprise Edition 32-bit). The installation was successful, however when we try to start the service we get a message saying

"Could not start the NSClient++(Win32) service on Local Computer

Error 32: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

We did try to re-install the agent, however its still the same, please help.

Tried uninstalling NSClient++, rebooting the Windows box, then reinstalling the NSClient++. Did you use the *.msi or the *.zip to install the agent?

We have tried uninstalling the agent and reinstalling the agent but no change. We could not reboot the server as it is production server. We have used the .exe to install the agent.

Is there any other workaround with out restarting the windows server.

In this case, you may want to dig in and find out what is the process that is "still using" NSClient++. You can probably use a tool like Process Explorer by Sysinternals. You may try using the msi installer next time. Hope this helps.

NSClient is a fresh install, the server did not have NSClient earlier, hence I suspect there is no scope for the service being utilized until being started. We will look in to the options and update.

You might want to check if there is any very old version of NSclient in the system, it was called something else in services and installed in different directory.
We had similar issues before.

This is definitely a possibility, it also may not be under the nsclient service, possibly under nscp or nscp++.

Upon investigation we found that a file named 'program' was being installed in the C drive which was stopping the NSClient++ service to start and collect the performance metrics. We have deleted the file and the nagios service started without any issue. However, we have done a server reboot over the weekend and we have similar situation again where in a file named 'program' was created in the C drive and the service is failing to start. Could you please let us know if NSClient is supposed to create any file with name 'program' in C: Drive? Or if you have come across this issue before, please advise.

Not really. NSClient++ creates a directory named "NSClient++" usually in C:\Program Files\. Open the services (services.msc), find the "NSClient++" service, right-click on it and select "Properties". What is the path to the executalbe? Do you see a service called "program"?
