Can we "yum update" without breaking anything?

Can we "yum update" without breaking anything?

Just wondering, if I installed from tarball as opposed to VM on a Centos 6.5 machine, is anything going to break if I do a yum -y update to bring things up to date on our server?

yum update -y should work just fine..
