Host Template Question

Hi Gurus,

Under the Configure -> Templates -> Host Templates, selecting the 'generic-host' (it could be any host for that matter) I open the Help & Documentation menu and see all the configuration options for this template. Most options under the "Check Settings" tab are straight forward, but I do not understand the differences between 'passive host checks' and 'active host checks'. The documentation only talks about enable/disable these features.
Where can I find more detailed information about how to use passive vs active host checking?

Active checks are when Nagios runs a plugin which checks the status of some service, and this is done on a schedule.

Passive checks are when some remote system monitors itself and sends results back to Nagios on its own schedule (or when an event occurs such as a login).
