We used to use big brother for our monitoring, and when we would ack an alert it would expire after 4 hours and start sending notifications again if the issue was still occurring.

Is there a way to do this in nagios?

Instead of acknowledging the alert, put it in scheduled downtime, when the scheduled downtime expires, you will start to receive the alerts again.

Once you acknowledge an alert, it won't send another alert until the state changed.
