We are having a strange issue with our NagiosXI config (2014R2.6).
When I go to a host and add it to a hostgroup it get's shown as belonging to that group on the host details. However: when I go to the hostgroup it is not shown there and says it has a relationship elsewhere.
Vice versa also applies: when I go to a hostgroup and add a host there it is shown fine. But when I go to that host it states it is not a member of that hostgroup at all.

For now, no major problems. But I want to get started on custom groups, and some BPI. Am guessing this might give some issues further down the line.
Is there something we can do to get this "in sync"?

Adding the hostgrup to a host is not the same as adding a host to a hostgroup. Both will give the same end effect(host will be a member) but it is two different ways to do it and you will not see it the one way in CCM if you do it the other way.

They both have the same effect and I believe BanditBBS described it correctly.

One thing to do is to make sure that you are doing it one way instead of a mix of both because it's easier to manage, come up with a standard process and let the rest of your team know the way you've chosen.

I get your explanations, but find the end result confusing.
When I look at this from a Windows perspective: if I add a machine to the active directory from the machine itself it would say that it was a member there, but not in AD. If I would add it in AD it would say it is a member there, but the machine itself would deny al involvement Maybe Nagios logic is different then what I am used to

But as you are both saying the end result is ok and this is not going to give us problems in the future I will accept the answer and live with it.
I will see what happens if I add a host to a group via the bulk change method and stick with that outcome for manual additions also.

In the end it really just comes down to where you will have to go when you want to sever the relationship. If you originally had added the host from the host management page, you will need to go there to remove it, and vice-versa. If you added it in both places, you will need to remove it from both places as well.
