Hi,

I'm running Nagios XI 2014 R2.6, and I have a host template that contains a variable for the SNMP community string.

If I apply this template directly to a host, the argument of -C $_HOSTSNMP_STR$ works.

However, if I apply this template to a hostgroup by going to CCM > Templates > Host Templates, editing the template and adding a host group under the 'Host Groups' button, it doesn't work for that hostgroup.

Is the naming convention of _HOST different if it comes from a template applied to a host group? Is there another way I should be doing this?

That's not how it works. By adding a hostgroup to that box you are telling the template to assign that hostgroup to any host the template applies to. You are not saying to apply the template to the hostgroup. It is a little confusing...

Is there a way to bulk assign a template, or assign templates to host/service groups? Or do I need to do it one by one?

Do you have enterprise license? I think the bulk modifications tool can do it.

I do have enterprise but bulk doesn't have anything for assigning templates, and the single config options are things like flap thresholds and notification intervals.

I just checked my latest developer revision XI box and it looks like this has been added in a later version of the component. I can't say when that will be released publicly, but it does appear to have been taken care of.

Thanks very much, our number of devices is not astronomically large so I was able to do this manually but was going to suggest it's a good idea for a future release

And it would be a good suggestion, so we did a bit of time travel and got it done before you suggested it
