Can I / Should I

Is it a good idea to use nagios to collect lots of data about a particular space, I would like to use it to collect lots of data such as Temp, Lighting Info, Number of people in the building Etc. I have lots of sensors that can easily send the info via Passive checks. I would like to store the data in mysql and run reports with crystal reports.

There could be thousands of spaces reporting pretty consistently. I would like to use Nagios because somethings would need to be acted on over temps, stale data etc...

I did a talk at our conference on this exact thing:

More focused on custom hardware than anything, but still worth taking a look.

This is one of my favourite things about Nagios, if you can talk to a device then you can monitor it in Nagios and collect the performance data for historical trends later.

Great Very Cool, So the number of potential sensors doesn't seem to be a concern. I'll start hacking together a proof of concept.

tmcdonald -

Would you mind posting the host config for the demo you showed in your talk?

Sorry for the late reply - this section of the forum was not showing new posts for some reason.

I don't have the config on-hand anymore, but it was basically whatever would have been created by the Unconfigured Objects wizard.
