Upgrade from XI 2012R1.2 to XI 2014R1.4 still shows old ver

I upgraded Nagios from XI 2012R1.2 to XI 2014R1.4 this afternoon and I don't think it took. After running the upgrade script I logged on to the web interface but it still showed the old version (2012R1.2). So I rebooted and the first reboot gave the following errors on boot at the console:

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 67s! [php:2582]

etc....(repeated 3 more times)
So I powered off the system and turned it back on. It booted up, but when I open the web interface it does not prompt me to "Finish upgrade" and it still shows the old version. I've reboot several times and still get the same results. Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Is the nagios monitoring engine coming online?
We have seen issues where more rigorous config file checking has caused the Nagios service to not start in which case the upgrade doesn't totally complete.

In addition to jdalrymple's post,
Any chance you tried logging out and logging back in? Occasionally that will need to take place for the 'Finish Upgrade' screen to appear.
Are you using XI with a proxy?

jdalrymple, Yes sir. The monitoring engine looks good, as do the rest of the components.
jolson, No proxy. I did, indeed, logout. In fact, I closed all my browser windows, cleared my cache, rebooted the server and then logged in. Still shows old ver. I'm a little aggravated at myself for not taking a snapshot of the VM before I started. I did run the nagios backup script though, I also ran a full backup on the system with our normal backup software.

Can you post the tail-end of your upgrade.log?

Ya know, after looking at that last line about no php-mbstring package available I got to doing some more searching and found that package is available via the "RHEL Server Optional" channel, which this system was not subscribed to. So it didn't install anything. I've added that channel to my nagios system in my RHN server. Should I try to install just that package? Or maybe try the upgrade again? I don't want to get ahead of myself.

Run the upgrade again... and that almost certainly is the problem.

Ok, I tried re-running the upgrade script and immediately got this error:
