Please can someone tell me how to add commands to the cfg file. I am not sure which files I need to update in for commands to be properly add to the commands.cfg file? thanks

In Nagios XI you shouldn't edit the object configuration files in the nagios/etc directory by hand, they are managed by the Core Config Manager and will be overwritten if you do. Use the Configure->Core Config Manager->Commands page to add or edit command definitions, then "Apply Configuration."
