As our tld changed from digipolis.be to digipolis.gent, I changed all the users email addresses. I'm a bit concerned however to the behaviour of the contacts, as the email addresses there have not been changed automatically it appears. So I was wondering how the Users are linked to the contacts.

If I changed a user's email address, will it still be linked to the old contact? What if I also changed the username and the email address of the user? Will Nagios XI match the user name with the contact name? What if I rename a contact linked to a user?

I believe the (User) "Username" and the (contact) "contact name" fields need to match for it all to work. The (User) "Name" field and the (contact) "Description" fields do not need to match.

Just in case. If I would delete an existing contact linked to a username and then rename another contact identically as this username, this new contact would become the 'linked contact'? (There is no match on id or sth in the db?)

That is correct, I believe the match is made between XI username and contact_name.

Thanks all for the replies. managed to fix most things that needed fixing. Had some issues with NagVis, but recreated accounts there. One small thing. It seems the email address is not synced between users and contacts. Wouldn't this be a logical implementation? As now I had to edit 100 users and the re-edit 100 contacts email addresses..

If you guys agree, I'll make a feature request.

We could make a feature request to have the option to link them, but I would not make it the default or enforced behavior. There might be cases where you would want those addresses to be different, and forcing them to match could mess up some environments.

WillemDH, did you ever make that request or did you want us to do so?
