This may be a dumb question but, is there a way that I can send email for a service problem only one time? I would like still like to have alerts go to the admins as normal but send only a email to our help desk support email.

In order to achieve this, you could use service escalations. Send first notification to the help desk support email, then escalate the rest of notifications to the admins email.
