Nagios and Exim

Hi Guys,

I have taken over a Linux Wheezy box with Nagios and Cactii. The last administrator has left. Email alerts no longer work. Telnet reveals that Exim is listening on port 25. Here is Exim's log. How do I fix this so I can get email alerts again?

Nagios not sending emails

Hi Guys,

I took over a Debian Wheezy box from another administrator that has Nagios and Cactii. I think he must have deleted his Exim account or something because emails no longer work. I have made the correct adjustments in Nagios SQL, but there seems to be another issue. Anyone ever used Exim with Nagios and know how to trouble shoot?

Thanks, :)

What do you get when you `ping watchtower`?

My guess is that your mail server's "FQ"DN changed. To conform to RFC's I think you need to put in your suffix also - but realistically I guess it should work if it's not there depending on how fussy of an MTA Exim is.

Hostname should resolve. Run the following commands and show us the output:

Code: Select all

hostname
hostname -i
echo "test mail." | mail -s Test root@watchtower

Thanks, here it is. Something is definitely wrong because it should be a 172.16.1.98 address. How do I change the host record?

Last login: Tue Jun 30 21:35:52 2015 from 172.16.1.90
root@watchtower:~# hostname
watchtower
root@watchtower:~# hostname -i
172.16.1.231
root@watchtower:~# echo "test mail." | mail -s Test root@watchtower

Admittedly you have me confused.

According to your log output it appears that you're trying to send E-mail to a host named "watchtower" - it also appears that watchtower is your Nagios host. Is your Nagios box also your mail server?

Also - yes your host resolution is messed up. Either you have a bad entry in your /etc/hosts file or your DNS is broken.

Your watchtower host is at 172.16.1.98 but is resolving itself to 172.16.1.231.

show us the contents of /etc/hosts

Sorry for the delay, here it is;

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1       localhost
172.16.1.231    watchtower

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
#::1     ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
#fe00::0 ip6-localnet
#ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
#ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
#ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

Is that watchtower line correct? It doesn't seem so based upon your earlier diagnostics...

If it's not correct - correct it.

If you can (meaning if DNS works in your environment) remove it entirely.

Thanks, I have decided to decommission this server. I am setting up a new Nagios server so I will be setting up email from scratch.
