Is there a way to adjust our email template to include the (Alias) or (Description) in the subject of the email. I tried %alias% in the subject line of the template but it just put %alias% instead of calling owner BTEMPLE

You need to use
%hostalias%. All of the various aliases are in your
xi_host_notification_handler and
xi_service_notification_handler commands, and the following doc explains in more detail:
