NRPE Error in a new installation

Hi all,
I'm new to Nagios.
I installed the latest nagiosXI 64bit VM with the OVF file on our ESX server.
I installed the nrpe on a new Cenos 6.6 64 bit OS with yum install after adding the repository.
once done I configured the host on the nagios server and get the error "CHECK_NRPE: Error receiving data from daemon."
looking in /var/logs/massages I see the error "nrpe[11550]: Host 192.168.220.254 is not allowed to talk to us!"
The IP above is not of the nagios XI server but of the FW behind the NagiosXI server.
I added the allowed_hosts with the nagios server IP (in different VLAN then the host to monitor) but I get the same error.
I know that the FW rules allow all traffic from the Nagios VLAN to the host in test and vise versa so no port is blocked.
I appreciate if someone will direct me how to configure the agent correctly as I'm new to Linux and Nagios.
Thanks in advance,
