We are looking for a way to send SMS messages from nagios XI via a modem or gateway via wireless. The only solution nagios seems to want to offer is the multitech ISMS SF100-G unit. The problem is that unit is discontinued since it only supports 2G wireless and in the US at least, 2G is being retired in January. Are there any alternative systems that work similarly?

You should be able to email the user via their text number. As an example, if my number was 612-123-4567 and my carrier was AT&T, you could email me at [email protected].

Well the issue here is one of the primary goals of nagios is to monitor the email system. If the email system is down, or our internet connection is down, it won't be possible for it to send alerts. So we're looking for out-of-band alerting options.

We use AT+T for our provider. I'll look at those SMS Eagle boxes, I don't know if they work with US providers or not, but they might work.

It looks like it is also 2G only. I see a few other vendors, but nothing looks terribly promising yet. Definitely open to more suggestions.

Is there a particular reason you don't want to use email to send out the SMS notifications?

Well, Nagios is monitoring the email. So if email goes down, it won't be able to send out alerts. (Also if our DNS servers fail, or our internet connection fails, again no alerts.)

That's why we need out of band alerting.

We don't have another SMS modem we have tested against. The Multi-Tech doc and component was not an official endorsement, so we're not particularly tied to any one device/brand. The process of writing an integration for a modem and testing it is a long one, so it may be a while before we get another doc working, if that is something we end up doing.
