Monitoring engine not starting

We are using a VM version of NagiosXIR1.7 and this morning after a reboot of the server, the monitoring engine will not start, which it was operating fine before the restart. When I attempt to start it from the web interface, it says an error occurred when processing your request. If I log into the server as root and run service nagios start, it comes back with
Starting nagios:CONFIG ERROR! Start aborted. Check your Nagios configuration.

If I go under the monitoring engine status, it looks like that the process start time is 3 weeks ago, not when I just restarted the server.

Please advise what we can do to get the service started.

Kirk

Nagios cannot start or restart with a bad configuration. In order to find out if you have any config errors, please, run the Write Config Tool. In the Core Config Manager, click on "Write Config Files" under "Tools" from the left panel menu. Click on all four "Go" buttons in "Nagios Core Configuration Export" screen and check the output for errors. You can also check our wiki page for more information:

The only error I get is when it attempts to Restart Nagios, I get:

Nagios daemon is not running, cannot send restart command!

No listed errors in the other 3 processes.

It is now running again. I deleted a host and services and when it applied the configuration it went back to processing.
