I work with a lot of application folks that have no idea what the server hostnames are. I would like to add the alias to the host and service details so they could see at a glance what server it is.
Is this possible?

Is editing the description not an option on this scenario?

I saw another thread where our esteemed colleague Box293 provided a solution for this:

In XI 5 there is a per-user option to show host or service aliases.

In the XI screen, at the top right click your username
On the Account Information page tick the box "Display service aliases"
Click Update Settings

In your case however, tick the box "Display host aliases"
Then in Host detail, you'll see the alias (description) in parentheses.

This does work for hosts. However, for Services, it just mirrors the hostname.

It works for me here, did you edit the 'Description' field under CCM > Services for a specific service ?
Here are the results I see. In the Description field for this service I inserted the string 'TEST ALIAS'

Even in your example, the alias that is next to the Host name is not the "alias" of the host name. The description of the service has changed, but I would expect the alias should show next to the host name as it does in the Host detail.

I've reported this as a bug in the internal tracking system, TASK ID 8030.

This bug has been fixed in the next release of XI.
