This AM I noticed that a domain registration check started to fail, but on a valid domain. On my Macs, whois is working fine.

CRITICAL - Domain xxxxxxxxx.com expired on Wed, 31 Dec 1969 19:00:00 -0500


When I perform a whois I get this:

[root@kitkat ~]# whois xxxxxxxxxx.net or .com
[Querying whois.verisign-grs.com]
[Redirected to whois.networksolutions.com]
[Querying whois.networksolutions.com]
[whois.networksolutions.com]

I then went online to a site to (MX Toolbox) perform the lookup and got this:

Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Reported by whois.networksolutions.com on 4/1/2016 at 5:06:11 PM (UTC 0), just for you.

So can I assume this is not a nagios issue?

Mine seems to be working all right. Is yours check using check_domain.php?

Correct, probably not a Nagios issue. "..forcibly closed" normally implies a firewall or proxy, but you were running that test from an online server.
Is there any difference when you run whois from the Nagios server CLI? (or is that what the whois results are from in your 1st post?)
