All,

I am looking to make our alerts more intelligent and have been have been looking into bischeck (http://www.bischeck.org/).

Before I get too involved I have a feeling there is maybe something in the XI product that does similar, is there and approved or recommended way of going about this?

I actually wrote the XI documentation for bischeck:

It's not current with the latest version however, so you will need to stick with the versions in the documentation that have been tested if you are going to follow mine.

As a general rule, thresholds in Nagios are static. On a per-plugin basis they can certainly follow a pattern if the author coded it that way, but that is much more complicated that using a flat value and most plugins don't take the time to do so.

Are there any more "real world" examples of using this or can we basically overwrite any checks we have deployed on servers just now with a calculated, threshold base from bischeck?

In theory you can probably convert all of your checks to use bischeck, but that would take some time. I honestly don't have any examples of other users taking this route, I just wrote the doc. Personally I would say use it sparingly where it makes sense to do so, since there is some overhead involved with both configuring the checks and running them.

Not that I am aware of. The only thing I can think of would be BPI (Business Process Intelligence) but that does not deal with dynamic thresholds.
