The plugins that come with nagiosxi (manual installation) appear to be outdated.

example:
# /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_http -V
check_http v2.0.3 (nagios-plugins 2.0.3)

Can I download the latest plugins from https://www.nagios.org/downloads/nagios-plugins/ and install them on top of my existing nagiosxi installation?

Yep -- should work without a problem after you compile them. Let us know if you run into any issues!
