I have an unusual (gasp) problem.
I've noticed that apply config takes longer than it should on my X5 machine. At times it runs slower that my 2014 box.
I don't even know where to begin to begin to troubleshoot this one.

the other thing is that page refreshes are lightning fast in core, but in XI not so much.

Generally the first thing I look for is crashed tables when I hear "slowness", check /var/log/mysqld.log or /var/log/mariadb/mariadb.log.

Also, run please run this tail command:

Then try to apply configuration again and send the full output of the tail command.

May also want to review your top output and your /var/log/httpd/error_log or /var/log/httpd/ssl_error_log.

Another good thing to check is to make sure that your /etc/hosts is up to snuff, what I mean by that is add the shortname and the FQDN to your 127.0.0.1 entry, make sure localhost is on there as well as any other shortname or FQDN that you access it from (say you have a special one on your own hosts file on the computer you are accessing it from OR the ones from Admin > System Settings > Program URL/External URL), just make sure they are all in there on the 127.0.0.1 entry.

In addition to ssax's suggestion, could you post a screenshot of Admin > System Information > System Status
Also, post the output of 'top' while 'apply config' is taking its time.
Lastly, what is the output of ipcs -q?

Thanks for the details....

You can try and tweak some PHP settings to see if that helps.
To do this, edit the /etc/php.ini file and change the following options to the values below.

    max_execution_time = 60
    max_input_time = 120
    memory_limit = 512M

Then restart Apache for the settings take place
service httpd restart

Also, you can edit the /etc/hosts file and add the server name to the following line.
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4 <yourNagiosServerName>

14,102 total objects, definitely getting up there. What sort of RAM and CPU do you have allocated? Do you have a ramdisk in place or the MySQL database offloaded? Around 10k total objects is when we usually recommend this, and 20k is the most I generally recommend for a single server.

Also, we can try doing a manual reconfigure_nagios.sh from the command line and look at the timing. You will need to yum install moreutils to get access to the ts command which prepends a timestamp in from of every line of output:

Then do the following:

and post the output. This should let us know where any slowness occurs in the process.
