Hello,

Is there a way to monitor processes and get alert when the parent-children relationship is broken, such as parent crashes but children processes still exist?

Thanks!!

Can you provide more details on how your system is setup for the Parent-Child relationship?
If the parent is down, can the Nagios server still connect to the children?
If so, then you may not want to setup a parent child relationship and then you will receive notifications for all of the hosts.

The parent-children relationship is among the processes running on a host being monitored. It isn't something I set up, but triggered by application running on that host (windows server). However we are experiencing issue with the application where the parent process would crash but leave the children processes orphaned. I would like to be able to capture this symptom and get alert when that happens.

Thanks!

The way the Parent-Child relationship works, if the parent is down, it will stop sending notifications for the children, so if you want to continue receiving them, then you would have to break the relationship by removing the parent server from the children.

thanks for the reply and trying to help. But it is the processes that I would like to monitor and it is the processes that have parent-children relationship, and this does not involve the server (host) itself.

I think I know what you want.
You are monitoring a windows system and a process that runs on it spawns children processes and you want to be notified if the parent process is down but the children processes continue to run. Is that what you need?
If so, this plugin looks like it could do what you want.

If not, you can search the Exchange site for what you need.
