Nagios performance improvement / Scale out plan

Hi -
We are noticing performance hits with Nagios - especially with the native ESX checks (which has been fixed using box293's check). Our implementation of Nagios is on a VM and it currently already has the maximum number of CPU's assigned to it (8) on a relatively new host.
What are our options for scaling out Nagios and what has other successful customers done? Do we just continually upgrade the hardware or are there other recommended configuration changes?
