Hi,

Are there any recommendations regarding Hardware Requirements for running Nagios 4.2.1. Is Nagios CPU Intensive or Memory Intensive application?
Any suggestions/recommendations will be highly appreciable.

Regards,

Kaushal

This really depends on how many host / service checks you plan to run, and then depends on what types of checks you plan on running. It can be both CPU or memory intensive, based on what types of checks you're after.

Starting off, you would be fine with 1 core / 1GB ram for just a handful of hosts, but your requirements could reach as far as 16 cores and 128GB ram if you had a very large system.

Do you have more information about your requirements?

Is there a requirement matrix showing the requirements based on host or services?
Of course it will be approximately.

Not really, no. Again, it is very dependent on many variables, such as:
  • Number of host/service checks
  • Check frequency (1-minute? 5-minute? Every hour?)
  • Plugin type (Compiled? Interpreted?)
  • Percentage of down objects (will increase check frequency)
  • Whether event handlers are in use, and if so how often
  • Whether checks are run remotely or locally, actively or passively
If you can give us an idea of some of the above we can provide a rough estimate, but my advice is always to set up a test environment, generate a baseline, and extrapolate from there.

Probably we could collect data from many users, therefore from many different environments, and create a graph like that:

graph.png (3.83 KiB) Viewed 3547 times
Then we could have a good idea what is happening in real world

That would be nice, but it would require that people volunteer that data. And even with that, strictly going off the number of hosts is not going to be accurate across all installs due to the many variables at play. As I said before, if you can provide some details we can help scope it out, but there is not a great forumla that can be applied to all environments.
