Hi there,

can you give us information about planed updates and release dates about logserver?

Elastic is currently in beta 1 of version 5 for the elk stack. Logserver is still on 3.
The more we work with logserver we are missing features in logserver such as the much improved aggregations since kibana 4.5, plugin compatibility, etc.

So when are updates planed? Can you tell about the targeted versions of the updates?

Agreed, I'd like to know the timeline here as well.

The next major release (NLS 2) Is around 2-5 months out currently (subject to change). This will be elasticsearch 2, logstash 2, and kibana 3.

The next major release after that (NLS 3) is planned to be elasticsearch 5, logstash 5, and kibana 5. That's quite a bit farther out though and I can't give a very good time-frame on it's release at the moment.

One of the reasons the next major version is going to be using ES 2 is contingent on the migration from ES 1 to ES 2 being a requirement for eventually moving to ES 5. The intention is to provide a buffer for all current users to get on ES 2 prior to the transition to ES 5.

So NLS 2 is really still kibana 3 or is that a typo and you meant 4.5 instead of 3?

I hope so, because in kibana 3 you cannot use the additional features which es 2 is offering like improved dynamic aggregations.

It's still a bit up in the air right now which Kibana version will make it into NLS 2; The developers are still looking over some stuff. We use a custom version of Kibana anyway, so adding dynamic aggregations wouldn't take that much effort (I think, i'm not really an AngularJS guy).

As a company that exclusively provides Nagios consulting services, we find that customers that come to us with assistance on Nagios Log Server that already have experience with ELK stack components are disappointed to discover the underlying versions of component software. Aggregate searches in logstash 2.4 are always at the top of the list.

As much as I love NLS, it is frustrating to explain to someone why their OSS ELK stack won't translate easily (or sometimes, at all) into commercial NLS space.

There are ways to migrate existing Elastic stacks using LS2/ES2 into the current version of Nagios Log Server, but i'm definitely sympathetic since that's not a process Nagios really supports and backporting is a messy process for basically any application/framework. It's definitely something we acknowledge as a weakness of the product.

In my spare time i've been working on better "here's how you move your current setup to Nagios Log Server" documentation/applications/scripts and have had some solid success in migrating ES2/LS2 indices/configurations from a vanilla Elastic stack (we use a custom Kibana so that part is a bit tricky). Possessing those sort of offerings are beneficial to us as a company for obvious reasons
