Nagios Core Upgarde 3.2.1 -> X.X.X

Good Day All,

We are planning on upgrading our current version of Nagios Core. We are at version 3.2.1. Targeting latest 4.x.x version.

I have checked the following :

https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ading.html

... but am concerned about it's simplicity. We have several hundred Servers and Services being monitored and feel that things could only go wrong, especially relating to plugins; agent versions etc.

Am I being overly paranoid or have people had success with this ?

Much appreciated.

Shaun

It's just recompiling to be on the newest version, all of the configuration files should work without a hiccup. The only complication could be is if this was NOT how you originally installed it.

Do you know if it was originally done from source, or are you using a package of some sort?

As always, I recommend taking a snapshot before proceeding, which will let you test the environment out.

Thanks ...

I believe it was done via compilation. It is a VM so a clone will be made prior to upgrade. Only rpm's currently installed at the moment are :

nagios-common-3.5.1-1.el6.x86_64
nagios-nrpe-2.14-1.el6.rf.x86_64
nagios-plugins-2.0.3-3.el6.x86_64

Regards

This suggests it was installed from a package, not source. For example: https://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/epel/ ... 86_64.html. While it is something we want to do, there are currently no plans to maintain a CentOS package.

What you could do is set up another machine and compile 3.5.1, import the settings from your current setup. That way, troubleshooting will feel more familiar to you. Once you have the compiled system working, then you can upgrade.

The upgrade process for Nagios XI is much smoother, so that's something you may want to think about.
