Monitor Linux server without an agent

Hi all.
I have some linux servers to monitor (unsure of the distros). I don't think installing anything on them is a possibility because they're production servers. Assuming that's the case...how the heck do I monitor them? Does linux have a WMI-esque daemon that I could get data from? Most of the documentation I've seen requires an agent or plugin(s) installation which isn't a feasible option. I was hopeful that I could use check_ssh and just grab some data but then I realized the remote server needed the plugins installed still. Any thoughts or advice?
