(New Install) CRITICAL - Socket timeout

Hello All,

New to NagiosXI and the NSClient++.

Have NagiosXI running. For the purposes of getting things going then lock down iptables is stopped. Can telnet to port 5666 on the Nagios server from the host being monitored. Ping is registering OK in Nagios to the host. All other services being monitored are in "CRITICAL - Socket timeout" status.

In looking at other posts there seems to be mention of ports 5666 and 1248 being in use on the client side? That I do not see as listening on the host. The NSClient++ is installed and the service is running. I do also see a firewall rule that allows the client exe communicate on any port.

I guess I should ask a question now. What am I missing in the install / config process of the client?

What version of NSClient are you using? There's an NRPE listener module that needs to be set (that's port 5666), but to be precise I will need a version number. You have the wrong NSClient port, but I assume that's just a typo. It's actually 12489.

We have https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios-XI.pdf but if you could provide any documentation you used that would be helpful.

One thing about NSClient...it is very particular about version #s, so make sure you are using the right documentation for your version.

A colleague urged me to try doing SNMP instead and he was right. It's easier to do a mass roll out and was far easier to configure. I'll stick with SNMP. Thanks for the reply
